
From the Declaration of Independence:“…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, …”
And the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
To See the Present and Future We Must Return to the Lessons of our ForefathersThat all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that governments derive their powers from the consent of the people are just as relevant and equally inviolable today as they were in 1776.
We start out equal when we are created and we have liberty and the right to pursue happiness. Liberty gives us the right to follow our own vision, to succeed or fail depending upon our efforts and abilities. Liberty gives us the right to choose what we believe, how we want to live our lives, and how we want to pursue happiness. Our Founding Fathers did not say we all had the right to have equal outcomes in life, but that we had the right to pursue happiness. Our Founding Fathers knew that governments derived their just powers from the consent of the governed, they were very fearful of governments granting or denying rights and governing in opposition to the will of the people.
The Preamble mentions union, justice, domestic tranquility, common defense, general welfare, and securing the blessings of liberty. Our Founding Fathers were intent on limiting the powers of government and preventing tyranny. This is the reason we have the Bill of Rights in our Constitution – to limit government. Nowhere are citizens guaranteed the right to riches, or the riches of others, or to be free from hardship, or offense, or failure.
Comments on Red States, Blue States, and Activist JudgesThe term Red States has come to mean states where the people are conservative (in the context of the Republican Party) and Blue States where they are liberal (in the context of the Democratic Party). These definitions are huge oversimplifications in many ways, but they do contain a certain amount of truth, as many generalizations do. The West Coast and the Northeast tend to have the Blue States and the South and Midwest the Red States.
If the counties within each state are classified as Red or Blue, one gets a very different picture. The Red-Blue differences are seen to be more related to urban vs. suburban and rural with most of the major cities Blue and most everywhere else Red.
Blue areas are almost always more densely populated; more polluted, have more minorities and illegal aliens, and suffer more crime than the Red areas. There appear to be some basic, fundamental differences in the way people think and behave when crowded than they do when they have more space. Or, conversely, fundamentally different types of people choose crowding over more open spaces. Whatever the cause and effect relationship, the differences are real and measurable. People from “red” areas tend to be more in line with our Forefathers’ thoughts and actions than are those from the “blue” areas. With noted qualifiers, from here on “Red” will refer to conservative and “Blue” to liberal; and I use the modern definitions of those terms.
Enter the Activist JudgesStarting with President Franklin Roosevelt, when he tried to pack the Supreme Court to get a liberal majority, and increasing drastically in the radicalization of the 1960’s, liberals have sought judicial avenues for their policies and goals when denied them by the people. Time and again voters have denied a policy or law, only to have the liberals rush to activist judges to obtain their goals through judicial activism. This is a serious erosion of the principle of governments deriving their powers from the consent of the governed.
The Corruption of ConservativesThere is a common, and derisive, term for conservatives who lose their core values derived from the beliefs of our Founding Fathers, and drift left toward a condition of less morality, less discipline, less accountability, less freedom, and more and bigger government. These conservatives without a moral compass are called Republicans in name only (RINO). This drifting to the left process has gone on since the beginning of our country, but I think it really took off in the 1960’s when so called moderate Republicans such as Rockefeller and Scranton fought the ascendancy of conservative Barry Goldwater.
Why and how the RINOs came to dominate the Republican Party are two fundamental questions of our time. There are probably as many explanations as there are RINOs and probably as few answers as there are conservative Republican leaders at the national level. Our colleges and universities, mainstream media, artists and entertainers, and much of our clergy have become very liberal. One hypothesis on why so many Republicans are RINOs, or start out conservative and become RINOs, is that they seek the approval and adulation of these liberal elites. Principles are sacrificed for acceptance and approval by the liberal elites. Why RINOs seek the approval of the intolerant, racist, politically correct, dogmatic, and anti-American liberal elites is another fundamental question of our time.
What Can We Glean from These Things?First, liberals long ago left the guidance and wisdom of our Founding Fathers behind, and in doing so, lost the concepts of constitutional rule, government of, by, and for the people, and democratic processes. They have a moral compass that points towards the Me not the we. But, there are powerful desires and temptations in their beliefs: power, lust, riches, fame, and all without personal accountability. Liberals have also captured important segments of our societies, are thus very powerful, and their siren songs are seductive. There must be something in all this that seduces Republicans and lures them to the dark side. The result? More RINOs.
America needs conservatives with a moral compass based on real faith and a belief in the principles and guiding documents of our Founding Fathers. Without conservatives we are losing our checks and balances a two party system brings. RINOs are an abomination to all, they talk one way and act another; conservative talk but copy-cat liberal policies and actions.
I firmly believe that America cannot maintain its freedom and justice for all under a one party system. Without the checks and balances of a two party system tyranny is inevitable.
