Open borders and national security are 180 degrees out of phase and either makes the other impossible.

Our National Debate on Security and Sovereignty

We now are having a great national debate. It is occurring everywhere from the highest levels of our national government and our public and private institutions to the general level of an informed citizenry. That the same citizenry had to arise and put down the out of control portions of our national government is a healthy sign for our country.

While healthy, it is also terrifying. The forces that would destroy America, and thereby eventually liberty and freedom in the world, have suffered a setback; they have not suffered a defeat for they pledge to come back again and again until they impose their will on an unwilling American public.

Dear God, how we miss the wisdom and decency of our Founding Fathers. How gifted they were and how utterly patriotic and selfless. The best example is George Washington. He could have been King, he could have been President for life, yet he chose public service unparalleled in history and then retirement to a private life few of our powerful emulate today.

With gifted vision he saw the necessity for immigrants to assimilate and become American rather than “settling of them in a body” because that would lead them to “…retain the Language, habits, and principles (good or bad) which they bring with them.” Here is how our First President said it.

“[T]he policy or advantage of [immigration] taking place in a body (I mean the settling of them in a body) may be much questioned; for, by so doing, they retain the Language, habits and principles (good or bad) which they bring with them. Whereas by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures and laws: in a word, soon become one people.”*
George Washington, November 15, 1794

Can you imagine Washington’s’ outrage at illegal immigration? At corruption of America’s businesses and government to the extent that they support open borders, illegal immigration, amnesty, and the destruction of the rule of law and government for the people in his beloved America?

What a bright, glorious day in America if a presidential candidate emerged with just 1% of the wisdom, decency, patriotism, and effective leadership ability of a George Washington. Let’s not ask for too much, let’s make that one hundredth of 1% or even one millionth of 1%.

How do we get a presidential candidate or president 1 millionth of 1% as good as George Washington?

I wish I knew. Perhaps nobody knows or we might have one. Perhaps it is impossible.

But, I believe it is good for the human soul to daydream of great things and great people. Here are some things we might do, that in my opinion might make it more likely for America to get a good and decent and honorable president again.

How about a return to a government of the people, by the people, and for the people?

Our leaders in major political parties, our leading public and private institutions, and those most in the public eye are not representative of the great body of the American people.

1) First, the American people should seek and demand a representative government, not a government of elite politicians serving their own purposes and at war with the American people.

We the people became so concerned with the betrayal of our Republic that we have just risen and temporarily stopped “comprehensive immigration reform”, the greatest betrayal of the United States ever organized and promulgated. The destroyers of America will be back, we must seek a permanent end to this betrayal, and others spawned in the secret plotting of those steeped in political correctness, self interest, and racism, which brought us so close to national self-destruction. This brings us to the second way we may reverse the course of our national leadership.

2) The patriotic people of good will who came together to stop this betrayal of America must stay together, continue working together, and be ready to rise again against the oligarchy that seeks to impose their selfish will upon us. They must grow and strengthen their alliance for the security and sovereignty of America.

As I have stated earlier here, the elites of the Democrat and Republican Parties have more in common with each other than with the American people. Thus, they serve their own interests exclusively and do not represent the majority of the American people. I personally have little hope that the Democrat Party will ever be able to reverse its slide into socialism and the inevitable tyranny which that brings.

What about the Republican Party? It is broken, it is drifting left, and it has lost its legitimate claim to being conservative and supportive of national security. Like Nero, President Bush has fiddled trying to please his Mexican colleagues and partners by maintaining an open border, while the fires of terrorism and the winds of more conflict and death rage around the world. I believe he has squandered our opportunity to effectively fight the war against terrorists. Open borders and national security are 180 degrees out of phase and either makes the other impossible. Nothing the Republican leadership can say or do will change this fact. This brings us to the third way we may reverse the course of our national leadership.

3) If the Republican Party cannot be rescued, and quickly, then it is time for a third party. Unfortunately, it is difficult to establish an effective third party, one successful enough to govern. This may be a lose-lose, stab me or shoot me, kind of decision we have to make. If we continue as we have then we might lose everything as the Democrat and Republican parties merge into a single movement towards the left. If the establishment of an effective (i.e. electable and able to govern) third party takes too long, then the combined Democrat and Republican parties may have time to lead America all the way left to socialism and tyranny.

Difficult times with difficult choices. But, even as we admire our Founding Fathers, we must live in the current time and we must face our current problems.

God Bless America.

I'd be happy if we could get one with 1% of the common sense of a turnip.

Loma Alta,

This is a most appropriate post, coming as it does just before the Forth of July. As a nation we were extraordinarily blessed by the wisdom and courage of the Founding Fathers. And it is a dismal comment on our present condition that any candidate with the courage to take a position not approved by the liberal establishment doesn’t get much notice. I agree that the Democrats are so in debt to their various left-wing constituencies and a bread-and-circuses electorate that there can be no hope from them. But I am even more disappointed by the Republicans. This is due in no small part to a sense of betrayal. I considered myself a Republican even when I was in high school. Considering that my family was all Democrats, and one of my Grandfathers held elective office, this is some measure of my commitment. I cast my first vote for Barry Goldwater and worked for the nomination of Ronald Reagan in 1976. But the current Republican Party is no longer mine. They have reverted to the “me-too liberalism” of Eisenhower and Rockefeller. The only reason that I am still on the rolls as a Republican is that the County Seat is 100 miles away, and there is no place closer to change registration.

Bobg, thanks for the comment. And Bob, you may be onto something. At least we could feed the turnips to the hogs.

Baxter, thanks for the comments and a little history. I appreciate your kind words.

I am in a quandry. I want out of the Republican Party too, but would also like being able to vote against RINO's in the GOP primary. There is plenty of time, so I guess I will mull it over for a while.

It would be great if Tom Tancredo's campaign took off and I am supporting him with a few $ in the hope that it will.

But I agree with you. It is tough to be betrayed by a party you have worked and voted for all these years. I happily voted for Bush in 2000 and then reluctantly again in 2004 as the lesser of two evils. I think that is a lose-lose strategy. You vote for the lesser of two eveils and you get the lesser and the greater evil too.

Again thanks for your comments, they are always welcome and appreciated.

LomaAlta, that is a wonderful, heartfelt essay. I feel much the same way.
I am in the same predicament: I also voted for Bush twice (the second time reluctantly) and now I am ready to burn bridges with the GOP, and hoping for a third party or an honest, pro-sovereignty candidate. I am hoping something good will come of the crisis we are in.
BTW, I looked for your e-mail addy, is it listed in your sidebar?
