More Freedom Lost in Latin America?

Is freedom only important in some places and not in others?

If the rise of communist rulers in Bolivia and Venezuela is bad news, get ready for some more. According to Novak, and others, communism is about to return to Nicaragua next week. Seems the U.S. has been supporting one of the anti-communist presidential candidates and opposing the other, and thereby, splitting the anti-communist vote and may be allowing the communist candidate, Ortega, to squeak in with as little as 35% of the vote. This seems just like the way the Republican leadership treated the anti-illegal immigration GOP candidates in our recent primary elections here in the U.S.

Please read Novak’s entire article here.

Nicaraguan tragedy
By Robert D. Novak
Monday, October 30, 2006

“The seemingly unavoidable outcome of next Sunday's election is a Nicaraguan tragedy, losing at the ballot box what was won two decades ago by the blood of Contra fighters and the risk of Ronald Reagan's presidency. Because the anti-Sandinista vote is split, Ortega figures to return his Marxist-Leninist party -- now backed by Hugo Chavez's Venezuelan petro-dollars -- to the presidential palace. Apart from the misery to be inflicted on the Nicaraguan people, this reflects the deterioration of U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere under the Bush administration.”

How ironic that the Bush Administration may hand Ortega what he couldn’t win on the battlefield or at the ballot box. This sounds more like the Carter Administration than a Republican Administration.
